New River Trail State Park, following an old railroad bed, meanders through southwestern Virginia and parallels the scenic and historic New River for 55 miles, hiking, biking, horseback riding and boating on or near the trail.

Claytor Lake, 4,500 acre, 21 mile long state park in the New River Valley offers miles of hiking trails, swimming, fishing, boating, camping, cabins and visitor center.

Mabry Mill, picturesque watermill located at milepost 176 of Blue Ridge Parkway, a short trail around the mill connects historical exhibits about life in rural Virginia, a gristmill, sawmill, and blacksmith shop, 20 minutes from The Timbers.

Historic Shot Tower, almost 200 years old, the tower was used to manufacture lead shot, open weekends April-October, 20 minutes from The Timbers.
